JLR 2016 Compositing Reel Breakdown

This is a detailed list of the work I did for each shot in my reel.

Feature 1 // Reel Intro

Outside of shooting the footage and modeling 3D geometry, I created everything you see in this showreel intro. I used a custom rig to track the footage and key it in After Effects. The 3D world was created with a combination of 3D elements inside After Effects, matte paintings, and composited inside Nuke's 3D system. I did the grading and post-effects inside both Nuke and After Effects. This VFX Soldier intro shows all the stage breakdowns I can utilize to create a 3D world from scratch!

Feature 2 // JET Tools

I did all the compositing in this scene breakdown. Taking several 3D renders from Maya making up the scene, I graded them together and added atmosphere and flares to blend the scene with the green screen footage of the talent.

Feature 3 // Jet Tools

I created the 3D city in the background using Element 3D in After Effects. The train track bridge and train were given to me to composite on top. I used several layers of silhouettes and plates of sparks to create the work site under the bridge. I then added grading and fog to create the atmosphere.

Feature 4 // Jet tools

In this compositing breakdown, I show the footage from which I keyed the talent. The room was created by fellow artist, and I was given multi-pass EXRs to create the final frame. I duplicated the floor panels to accommodate the space, and finished the shot with grading and light lens effects.

Feature 5 // Saavn

Here I was given a plate of the Ferrari exhaust pipes as the car sat idle. I tracked the shot and added several layers of raw After Effects elements along with plates of fire elements to make the exhaust spit flames. A quick sticker removal was done and I added heat distortion on top to boost the overall effect.

Feature 6 // CAT Vocational trucks

In this project, I used Nuke to matte paint the extended background including the city, sky, and hills. I then got multi-pass EXRs from the 3D team and composited those into the scene along with the smoke elements from them. I added lens flares and post lens effects.

Feature 7 // CAT TRUCK TEASER

In this shot, I was given the task of building up this construction site by adding the building in the background. I was able to partially key the fence to put back over the image, and I added the rolling ground fog for some atmosphere.

Feature 8 // Samsung

This shot was created using footage from a miniature built at our studio as the base. I used this footage, duplicating it several times to create the hallway of pillars. I created the ground plane and found reference images for the far background. The ballet footage was composited into the pillars in After Effects.

Feature 8 // Spirits Released
